KANSAS CITY -- Christian Colon's high school coach remembers the first time he saw Colon play.
The Royals' first-round selection in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft had just transferred to Canyon (Calif.) High School, 10 games into his junior season. Though he got a late start, Colon played like he had been a part of the team his entire career.
"He was exceptional from Day 1," said, Joe Hoggatt, Colon's coach at Canyon HS. "He came in, had one practice with us and played the very next day. In his second at-bat, he hit a home run, and he just became one of the guys right off the bat -- one of the better guys."
Even more impressive than his on the field ability, according to Hoggatt, is the demeanor Colon carries with him.
"He's a fun-loving kid who just has a magnetic personality," Hoggatt said. "People were just drawn to him. You can't help but feel good after you talk to him. That's the best way that I can describe him."
Even after joining the team after the start of the season, Colon didn't take long to earn their respect.
"It was a hard sell at first, because we had guys that had been there for three and four years that had worked their butts off, and he came in after one practice and made the starting lineup," Hoggatt said. "But you could tell he was that type of player. You knew he was special.
"It didn't take long [until] you felt like he was there for all three years."
