KANSAS CITY -- The Royals added left-handed pitchers Jeff Francis and Bruce Chen to their 40-man roster on Thursday.
Chen took the spot vacated by pitcher Gil Meche, who announced his retirement on Tuesday. To make room for Francis, left-hander Dusty Hughes was designated for assignment.
Hughes posted a 1-3 record and a 3.83 ERA in 57 relief appearances last year, his first full season with the Royals. He earned his first Major League victory on May 14 with a scoreless inning against the Chicago White Sox in a 6-1 win.
In 56 1/3 innings, he gave up 59 hits, walked 24 and hit five batters. On the plus side, he gave up just three home runs and his 57 appearances were the second-most by an American League rookie.
