Royals head to Fenway

Royals hit the road for series against Red Sox

It's back to Fenway Park on Friday for the Royals. Things didn't go very well there in July when the Royals lost three one-run decisions, 5-4, 1-0, 1-0.

Matter of fact, in the last four years, the Royals have accumulated a 1-11 record at the ancient ballyard in Boston.

At least the Royals will catch the Red Sox on a downward spiral, losing 17 of their last 24 games. They're just 22-32 since the All-Star break.

The Royals will send left-hander Odalis Perez against the Red Sox for the first time this season. He's had two starts against them in his career and, despite a 3.46 ERA, is 0-1.

Perez has won one of his last four decisions, but the Royals are satisfied with his progress. He's pitched well enough to last seven innings in three of those games.

The beat-up Red Sox will start journeyman right-hander Kevin Jarvis.

Pitching matchup
KC: LHP Odalis Perez (1-3, 5.85 ERA)
Perez pitched into the eighth inning last Saturday night against the White Sox, but surrendered five runs and lost to Mark Buehrle. Even though he gave up 11 hits, several were bloopers and the deciding blow was a double that an outfielder lost in the twilight. He also struck out Jermaine Dye four times and 65 of his 90 pitches were strikes. This marked a nice recovery from a subpar outing against the Blue Jays.

BOS: RHP Kevin Jarvis (0-1, 3.60 ERA)
Jarvis performed well in his first start in a Boston uniform, giving up seven hits and two earned runs over five innings against the Blue Jays. The right-hander took a tough-luck loss in that one, as A.J. Burnett stifled the Boston bats. The Red Sox are the 10th team Jarvis has pitched in during his career, making him the definition of a journeyman. He has a career record of 34-49 with an ERA of 6.04.

Player to watch
David DeJesus has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games for the Royals, going 21 for 68, .309, and has scored 16 runs.
