This will be the third time the Royals have faced Josh Beckett, and they've scored just two runs against him in 14 innings. In one of his best outings, July 19 at Fenway Park, he held the Royals to four hits in eight shutout innings.
On Aug. 9, in Kansas City, he went six innings and gave up three runs (two earned).
KC: RHP Luke Hudson (7-5, 5.21 ERA)
In his last start, Hudson rang up 10 strikeouts, the most by a Royal in five years -- though it was tied by Odalis Perez on Friday. In four of his last seven starts, he's gone seven innings. Disregard the 11-run aberration in his Aug. 13 start, and his ERA as a starter is 3.39.
BOS: RHP Josh Beckett (14-10, 5.11 ERA)
Beckett labored a bit in his last start, giving up five hits and three runs over five innings. He was limited to 77 pitches, thanks to a rain delay that forced him to warm up twice before he threw his first pitch. Wins have been hard to come by for Beckett of late, as he's 1-5 since Aug. 3. Beckett is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two outings against the Royals this season.
Player to watch
Manny Ramirez has had quite a career against the Royals. His totals: .338 (131-for-388), 35 home runs, 109 RBIs. He's been in a slump, though, since coming back from a sore knee -- 2-for-12 in four games.
