Gordon recovers from broken nose

KANSAS CITY -- It was not the way that Alex Gordon wanted to finish the season -- not with a broken nose -- but he's on the way to recovery.

Gordon was released from St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City on Monday after spending the night for treatment and observation.

He suffered a broken nasal cavity in the ninth inning of Sunday's season-ending game when a ground ball from the Indians' Kelly Shoppach took a wild hop and struck his nose.

Gordon fell to the ground and was down for several minutes while heavy bleeding from his nose was slowed. Finally, he walked off the field and was taken to the hospital for X-rays and treatment.

The rookie third baseman finished the season with a .247 average. Despite struggling in the first two months, Gordon led the Royals with 36 doubles, was second in home runs with 15 and tied for second in RBIs with 60.
