Rangers 15, Royals 7
At Surprise, Ariz.
March 1, 2008
Rangers at the plate: Chris Davis hammered a three-run homer to finish off a five-run third inning. Kevin Mench led off the three-run fifth with a blast to left. But Julio Borbon topped them with a grand slam in a six-run seventh off Minor Leaguer Dusty Hughes. Jarrod Saltalamacchia had two hits, including an RBI triple. John Mayberry Jr., son of the Royals' Hall of Famer, had an RBI single against his dad's old team.
Royals at the plate: Alex Gordon lined two RBI singles in his three at-bats. His replacement, Mario Lisson, had an RBI single which Mark Teahen followed with a run-scoring double. Teahen had two hits and a walk. Miguel Olivo reached three times on a single, hit by pitch and a walk. Ken Huckaby went 2-for-2.
Rangers on the mound: Starter Vicente Padilla breezed in his two scoreless innings. That couldn't be said for successors Scott Feldman, Frank Francisco and Jason Davis. But Franklyn German stopped the slide with a perfect seventh.
Royals on the mound: Starter Zack Greinke delivered two scoreless innings despite two walks, unusual for him. When Greinke went out for the third, though, the Rangers got three straight singles and a run to end his outing. Before his relief, Matt Peterson, was finished, the Rangers had a five-run inning. Young right-handers Carlos Rosa and Julio Pimentel each had a rough outing. Yasuhiko Yabuta gave up a run on two walks and a bloop single but the other setup man, Ron Mahay, had a scoreless inning.
Cactus League records: Rangers 2-1, Royals 1-2.
Up next: The two teams have a rematch at 2:05 p.m. CT Sunday at Surprise Stadium. Brian Bannister will start for the Royals against Jason Jennings. Also scheduled to pitch for the Royals: Kyle Davies, Jimmy Gobble, Leo Nunez, Joel Peralta and Ryan Braun. Those following the Rangers' Jennings include Luis Mendoza and Jason Davis.
