Cubs at the plate: Daryle Ward, coming off an injury last season, ripped a double and three singles with three RBIs as the DH. Micah Hoffpauir, a non-roster first baseman, had a triple, double, single and a sacrifice fly with two RBIs. Ward is 9-for-13 (.692) and Hoffpauir is 11-for-26 (.423). Eric Patterson slammed a two-run homer, had two singles and scored four runs. Felix Pie had three hits. Alex Cintron had two hits, including a three-run double. The Cubs had 21 hits.

Royals at the plate: Jose Guillen made his debut and went 0-for-3. John Buck doubled home a run in the third. Alex Gordon doubled for the only other hit.

Cubs on the mound: Ryan Dempster, in his third start, breezed through four innings. He gave up one run on a walk and a double. Kerry Wood pitched one scoreless inning as did Carmen Pignatiello, Michael Wuertz, Neal Cotts and Carlos Marmol.

Royals on the mound: Starter Brett Tomko gave up nine hits and six runs (five earned) in 2 1/3 innings. Leo Nunez was clipped for three runs on five hits in his three innings.

Cactus League records: Cubs 5-7, Royals 5-6

Up next: Hideo Nomo, who hasn't allowed an earned run in five innings, will make his first start for the Royals against the San Francisco Giants at 3:05 p.m. CT on Monday at Surprise Stadium. Barry Zito will start for the Giants. Also scheduled to pitch for the Royals are Joakim Soria, Chin-Hui Tsao, Jimmy Gobble and Carlos Rosa.

Second baseman Mark DeRosa is expected to make his Cactus League debut on Monday when the Cubs travel to Maryvale to face the Milwaukee Brewers at 3:05. Left-hander Rich Hill will make his third spring appearance, but first start.
