Layne, an umpire in the Major Leagues for 18 years, was admitted to New York-Presbyterian for overnight observation.
The Royals' Joey Gathright fouled back a bunted ball to lead off the third, narrowly missing catcher Jorge Posada's head and striking Layne on the center of his mask. Yankees trainers immediately came to his assistance.
When Layne was hit, he stumbled back and reached out for Posada's hand, saying, "Hold on to me, hold on to me," Posada said after the game.
"He got hit pretty good," Posada said. "Got him in the chin, kind of like a boxing jab.
"I hope he's OK. He's a good guy."
