KANSAS CITY -- Royals right-hander Zack Greinke dropped the appeal of his five-game suspension Sunday, and began serving it during the finale of the Kansas City-Minnesota series.
Greinke's next outing will be pushed back from Friday to Saturday, when he'll start against the Yankees. With the off-day Monday, Gil Meche will be able to start Friday after his normal four days of rest.
Greinke received the suspension from Major League Baseball after hitting Nick Swisher of the White Sox with a pitch on Aug. 3. Catcher Miguel Olivo also received a five-game suspension for his actions during a melee that day, and his suspension remains on appeal.
"The off-day helps because you can still get normal rest for other guys," Royals manager Trey Hillman said while addressing the Greinke situation. "In effect, he misses his turn, but we'll just reschedule it."
