KC to open '09 season in Chicago

KANSAS CITY -- How's this for the grand reopening of Kauffman Stadium?

The New York Yankees will be in Kansas City for the first game at the renovated stadium on Friday, April 10. The Bronx Bombers will be at Kauffman Stadium for a three-game series that weekend.

The Royals will kick off their 2009 season at Chicago on Monday, April 6, against the White Sox. This is just the second time the Royals have opened their season in the Windy City; the first was in 1976.

The 2009 schedule was announced on Wednesday.

The home schedule includes the annual visit by the St. Louis Cardinals on June 19-21. Other Interleague rivals in KC will be the Cincinnati Reds and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

On the Interleague road, the Royals will visit St. Louis on May 22-24 and also call on the Houston Astros and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Royals will end the season on Oct. 4 at Minnesota, where the Twins are scheduled to close down their operations at the Metrodome before moving into a new stadium in 2010. The Royals also closed out Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis in 1981.

Just before that, on Sept. 28-30, the Royals will get their first look at new Yankee Stadium in New York. That's the only other time they play the Yankees after the opening series in KC. This will be the fourth time the Royals will open at home against the Yankees; the previous times were this year, 1984 and '77.

The Royals will have home games on Easter (April 12), Memorial Day (May 25), Father's Day (June 21), July 4th and Labor Day (Sept. 7). The heaviest month of home games is May with 17, followed by the lightest month with only 11 home dates in June.

Game dates are subject to change. Game times will be announced later.
