KANSAS CITY -- Mark Donato, a first baseman with the Royals' Rookie classification club at Surprise, Ariz., was suspended for 50 games without pay for a violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, the Commissioner's office announced on Tuesday.

Donato tested positive for an amphetamine. The suspension was effective immediately.

Donato, 20, was the Royals' 26th-round choice, from Indian River State College in Florida, in this year's First-Year Player Draft. In 38 games with Surprise, he batted .253 with three homers, 13 doubles and 27 RBIs.
