SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Thursday was a day off for most of the Royals, but not for left-hander Bruce Chen.

Chen pitched five innings for Double-A Northwest Arkansas, facing players from the Royals' Triple-A Omaha club, in an intrasquad game at the club's training complex.

Chen gave up four hits and four runs (two earned), with no walks and four strikeouts. He threw 74 pitches, including 50 strikes.

Chen and Luis Mendoza are the finalists for the No. 5 spot in the rotation behind James Shields, Ervin Santana, Jeremy Guthrie and Wade Davis. Mendoza is scheduled to pitch in a Minor League game on Friday.
