KANSAS CITY, MO (August 2, 2013) - The Kansas City Royals today announced their minor league award winners for July. Position players were selected based on walk to strikeout percentage while pitchers were chosen on a percentage of batters retired with three pitches or less. Additionally, the Lexington Legends received an affiliate award for the lowest walk per 9.0 inning ratio. The individual winners are as follows:
Omaha (AAA) - Irving Falu (INF) and Brian Sanches (RHP): Falu, 30, scored 10 runs while recording 13 walks and four stolen bases. Sanches, who will turn 35 next Thursday, finished July at 5-0 with a 0.95 ERA over 28.1 innings.
Northwest Arkansas (AA) - Mitch Canham (C/1B) and Sugar Ray Marimon (RHP): Canham, 28, recorded a .404 on-base percentage, walking 11 times over 14 games. Marimon, 24, has posted a 3.40 ERA over eight starts since the Texas League All-Star break.
Wilmington (A) - Daniel Mateo (INF) and Malcom Culver (RHP): Mateo, who will turn 22 on August 10, drew 12 walks while compiling a .363 on-base percentage. Culver, 23, held opponents to a .104 batting average (7-for-67) over 21.0 innings of relief work.
Lexington (A) - Cameron Gallagher (C) and Christian Binford (RHP): Gallagher, 20, posted 12 hits, 11 walks and six RBI in 21 games. Binford, 20, limited opponents to a .207 average while going 3-1 with a 1.41 ERA and 38 strikeouts over 32.0 innings. He fanned 12 batters over 6.0 innings in his last outing on July 28.
Idaho Falls (Rookie) - Carlos Garcia (2B) and Yender Caramo (RHP): Garcia, 21, batted .346 with 14 RBI, 20 runs and seven stolen bases in 24 games. He walked 10 times and posted a .419 on-base percentage. Caramo, also 21, finished July at 3-0 with a 3.10 ERA in 20.1 innings.
Burlington, N.C. (Rookie) - Tyler Chism (OF) and Ryan Mattes (RHP): Chism, 24, hit safely in his first 16 games after joining Burlington on July 18. He batted .431 (22-for-51) over the stretch with three home runs, nine RBI, 14 runs and 10 walks. Mattes, 22, limited batters to a .222 average (6-for-27) in July. Opponents are batting .154 (6-for-39) overall against the 6'7" right-hander.
Surprise (Rookie) - Logan Davis (INF) and Tripp Davis (LHP): Logan Davis, 21, scored 10 runs in 18 games and was promoted to Idaho Falls on July 30. Tripp Davis, 22, recorded a 3.00 ERA over 12.0 innings. He has held opponents to a .214 average on the season (15-for-70).
Dominican Summer League - Angelo Castellano (3B) and Yimaury Pena (RHP): Castellano, 18, is batting 288 with a .378 on-base percentage in his second professional season. Pena, 19, was 2-0 in July, recording a 0.50 ERA while holding opponents to a .164 average in 18.0 innings of work.
