KANSAS CITY -- The Royals on Monday requested unconditional release waivers for 30-year-old infielder Irving Falu -- who was designated for assignment on Nov. 20 -- clearing the way for Falu to become a free agent and get a fresh start with another club.
Falu spent his 11-year pro career with the Royals but didn't reach the Majors until 2012, when he got into 24 games and hit .341. This season he played just one big league game, the final game of the season, at third base.
Falu, a switch-hitter from Puerto Rico, has played 1,151 Minor League games with a .278 average, 26 home runs, 389 RBIs and 211 stolen bases. He batted .283 at the Triple-A level.
