On Friday, Syndergaard will take part in a premier pitchers' duel when he squares off with El Paso right-hander Matt Wisler, the Padres' No. 3 prospect. The game, which begins at 9:05 p.m. ET, can be seen on MiLB.TV.
Syndergaard, ranked No. 10 on MLBPipeline.com's Top 100 Prospects list, struck out a season-high 10 batters in his last outing. In eight starts this season, he has a 3.92 ERA and a 46-to-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 43 2/3 innings.
Wisler, ranked No. 67 on the Top 100, began the season with Double-A San Antonio and was promoted to El Paso earlier this month. He struggled in his first two starts in the Pacific Coast League, allowing 12 runs on 16 hits in 6 1/3 innings. But Wisler has a stellar track record since the Padres selected him in the seventh round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. Even after two poor starts in Triple-A, he has a 2.89 career ERA in full-season ball.
Wisler has flown through the Minor Leagues and is just 21 years old. If he had begun the season with El Paso, he would have been the second-youngest player in the PCL on Opening Day. As it was, Wisler was the seventh-youngest player in the Texas League.
In addition to Syndergaard and Wisler, several other pitchers ranked in the Top 100 are scheduled to start Friday, including Jon Gray (No. 13), Robert Stephenson (No. 16), Julio Urias (No. 54), Braden Shipley (No. 66), Matt Barnes (No. 74), Nick Kingham (No. 91) and Daniel Norris (No. 100). Fans can watch Stephenson, Barnes and Kingham on MiLB.TV, beginning with Kingham and Double-A Altoona hosting Richmond at 6:30 p.m.
