The takeoff has now reached 10 straight games and, since the Astros debacle that ended May 28, the Royals are 15-4 and in first place by 1 1/2 games over the Tigers in the American League Central.
This narrative took place even before the Royals notched their latest victory, 2-1, over Detroit on Wednesday, but it was almost as if Yost knew there was no stopping his team.
"I kept saying, 'They're going to take off, they're going to get better,'" Yost said. "That's why we don't fluctuate the lineup. They're going to hit. Their lifetime averages prove that they can hit, they can hit with power.
"It was just their time. You knew sooner or later it was going to happen. You wanted it to happen as soon as it could. Then it did. It was just their time, nothing really changed."
Except that now they're having success.
"You look at their [career] numbers and you know they can hit. They've all proved that they can hit," Yost said. "But our guys have got to hit for us to be successful and, bam, everybody started hitting."
Well, pretty much. After Houston, starting with a series at Toronto, Billy Butler has hit .368 with 11 RBIs, and Alcides Escobar is at .366 with 26 hits -- most during that 19-game span.
Jarrod Dyson, playing part-time, is at .344. Salvador Perez's .333 is accompanied by 12 RBIs. Alex Gordon has five homers, 13 RBIs and a .324 mark. Lorenzo Cain, at .313, has 14 RBIs.
Omar Infante also has 14 RBIs and a .244 average. Nori Aoki is at .250. Mike Moustakas is at .214, but has nine RBIs and Eric Hosmer is just .207 but has 12 RBIs.
As a team, the Royals have 18 home runs, 100 RBIs and a .290 average, scoring 106 runs, or 5.6 per game, in the 19 games.
"I've been saying all along this team is going to get hot. You ride it as long as you can," Yost said. "Didn't I say that once we got hot, we'd go on a like 23-for-30 run?"
Since May 19, the Tigers have a 9-20 record.
"We were fortunate that our good streak came at the benefit of them having a bad streak," Yost said. "Because last year we'd go on good streaks but they'd win every dadgummed game and we'd pick up nothing. So the idea is to get to first place and you ain't gotta worry about what anybody does, except for yourself."
