KANSAS CITY -- Danny Valencia returned to action Sunday after missing the last 19 games with a strained left hand.

Valencia played nine innings at third base in the Royals' 2-1 series-finale loss to the Mariners, finishing 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

"I felt all right, my hand is not 100 percent, but it's enough that I can compete," Valencia said.

Any discomfort that may persist pales in comparison to what he endured during a series against the Blue Jays in late May that preceded his trip to the disabled list.

"Last time I was hurt earlier in Toronto, I just couldn't do it," Valencia said.

With right-hander Zack Greinke on the mound, the right-handed-hitting Valencia did not start Monday against the Dodgers. Mike Moustakas, a left-handed batter, played third.
