KANSAS CITY -- A's manager Bob Melvin unsuccessfully challenged a safe call on a pickoff attempt in Thursday's game in Kansas City.

With one out and runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, A's righty Ryan Cook threw over to third baseman Josh Donaldson on a close pickoff attempt of the Royals' Lorenzo Cain. Cain was deemed safe by third-base umpire Tom Hallion, a decision that was ruled to stand following a replay review.

Melvin is 12-for-21 in challenges this season.
