Gordon to bench as Royals get healthier

ST. PETERSBURG -- With Chris Getz reclaiming the Royals' second-base job, Alberto Callaspo moved from second base to third base and Alex Gordon went to the bench on Friday.

Gordon, whose season debut was delayed by a broken right thumb, was hitting just .194 (6-for-31) with one double, one home run and one RBI in 11 games.

"I think everybody's pretty familiar with Alex's numbers here. They haven't been good, obviously, and Callaspo does a better job defensively at third base than he does at second," manager Trey Hillman said. "Unfortunately for Alex, he's not swinging it that great, and there have been some plays at third base that he knows he could've made."

Gordon joins infielder Willie Bloomquist, injured outfielder Rick Ankiel and catcher Brayan Pena on the bench. Ankiel remained out of the lineup for a sixth game with a right quad strain.
